What you need to know

Start by unrolling your Yoga Mat and placing the cushion on top (with zip against the floor). With 5 mm of natural foam for comfort, you can sit cross-legged with your ankles on the floor – or kneel over the Cushion with your knees facing outwards. Whichever you prefer, aim for a long spine with your hips above your knees.

Positioning yourself towards the edge of the Cushion will help lower your knees and tilt your sacrum forward. Doing so makes it easier to straighten your back for extended periods. It also keeps your feet from falling asleep.

If you find the Cushion is too high you can carefully remove some of the buckwheat fill. If you prefer a softer seat, try removing the acupressure pad.

When it comes to using the Mat on its own, think yin, nidra, core workouts and slow flow – but don’t be scared to work up a sweat. A little moisture will ramp up the grip of the responsive textile upper. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is all it takes to clean.

Hold the loops of your carry strap in either hand to stretch your shoulders, hips and hamstrings to warm up, and lay your Shakti Mat and Pillow on top for a spikey Savasana that’s 10x more restorative.

• Once the Mat is unrolled, it’s designed to be left there. This is key to building a consistent practice, and it’s purposely heavier than most yoga mats so you can sink into its support. That being said, the convertible carry strap is there if your studio’s offering doesn’t stack up.
• You must know by now that bare skin is best – but you can wear thin shorts or leggings and experiment with weighted blankets and bolsters to complement your practice.
• If you own a Shakti Mat, the Grounded in Comfort Yoga Mat is (in our opinion) the best surface to lay it on.
